Poems

Good afternoon,

Yesterday I sent the students home with a list of poems that they are to memorize.  Each day next week (beginning on Monday), the students will present their poem to the class.  A few students have asked if they can memorize a Shel Silverstein poem that they had already practiced for the divisional auditions and I said that was fine.

I also included a copy of the rubric.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Field Trip

Good afternoon,

On May 28th, the grade 5 class students from room 22 will be going to Fort Gibraltar with Mme Craciun to further their knowledge in the era of the Fur Trade and life prior to the Confederation.

We will be departing the school at 10:00 am and will be returning to the school at 12:45 pm.  The students will eat their lunch upon return.  If your child eats at the daycare, please ensure they have a lunch with them that day.

There is not cost for this field trip.  Transportation costs will be paid by the school and the entrance fees will be paid using funds from the school fundraiser.

Expectation of behavior will be reviewed prior to leaving the school.
Please return the form by Friday May 23rd.

If you have any questions, please contact me at (scraciun@sjsd.net).

Merci beaucoup,

A few notes ...

Good afternoon,

Here are a few notes:

1. Students are to work on their reading comprehension booklet in French called Babouche est jalouse.  They are to finish it for tomorrow.  They may do this instead of LCM.  If your child is already done the booklet, they may read as usual.

2. As I'm sure most of you know, the students are creating a comic book using the iPads and the different apps that our school coordinator, Andy McKiel, presented a few weeks ago.

On Friday, the students will have their pictures taken against green screen.  The grade 4 and 5 teachers are asking that the students bring in props and costumes that they would like to use for Friday.  We do ask that the students not wear green as it will blend in with the screen.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Artist visit

Good afternoon,

We were fortunate enough to welcome back Sandra Wiebe.  She was a guest artist last year and has returned to do another project.

Today the students looked at different sketches and painting by naturalist Ernest Thomas Seton who lived in Winnipeg.

Mrs Wiebe will be working with our class next week.

April Newsletter

Hello parents, it is hard to believe, but we are nearing the end of yet another school .  Here is what we have been studying in 5-22:

ELA:
We have continued to read the Banished from our Home to go along with our studies of Acadians.  We have also worked on grammar, especially the placements of commas.  The students have also paired up with a partner to create a comic strip using different apps available on the iPads.

Sciences humaines:
We have begun looking at the Hudson Bay Company and their expansion in North America during the 18th century as well as their competition with the North West Company.  We have also begun to look at the animals, which were used during the Fur Trade.

Sciences de la nature:
We have been finishing off the units on the human body.  Students identified the different systems and what their functions are.

Français:
This month we studied the novel Babouche est jalouse and students had an opportunity to illustrate, and make connections. We also finished our reading groups and answering higher-level (inferencing) questions.

Math:
We continue to work on problem solving strategies.  We have begun to look at fractions, vocabulary and equivalent fractions (for example 2/4=1/2)

Art:
The students incorporated Math and Art by creating equivalent fractions.  They also drew or painted a background for their technology project.  We will have a professional visual artist coming during the month of May.
