A few notes...

Good morning,

Here are a few notes:

1. Just a friendly reminder that the rough drafts for the speeches are due by Tuesday.  I have been giving them time in class and it is also a long weekend coming up.  We will be presenting the speeches the morning of February 12th.

2. I will be giving the students a Math quiz next Wednesday to cover the unit of multiplication.  I sent a sheet home last week with the strategies we have been practicing.  They may use whichever strategy they feel most comfortable with.  The students have been participating in centres in order to practice and I have been able to work one on one with them.  We will do a review in class over the next few days as well.

3.  I am sending home progress reports today.  I do ask that they be signed and returned with your child to school.

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Speeches

Good morning,

I have spoken to the students and their speeches will be due next Tuesday.  I will give them lots of time in class and this weekend is also a long weekend as there is no school next Monday.

I will work with the students during the week.  They will also be allowed to bring their booklets home in order to work on it during the week.

All research should have been completed at home, and I will no longer give them class time for that.

If you have any questions, please feel free as always to contact me at scraciun@sjsd.net.

Recipe for Success

Good morning

In the New Year, the Winnipeg Foundation is kicking off the Recipe for Success Video Cooking Contest with the goal of getting kids in Grades 4-6 talking about, preparing and eating healthy food. The contest kicks off January 13.
*****
Research shows the best way to get kids to eat healthy food is by getting them involved in preparing it. That’s why the Recipe for Success Video Cooking Contest aims to nourish the potential of Winnipeg kids by getting them talking about, preparing and eating healthy sandwiches.
The contest, which kicks off January 13, encourages kids in Grades 4-6 to create their most outrageous, nutritious and delicious sandwich and share it in a video entry to win.
Up for grabs is one of three $500 grants to support healthy food at a school or community organization, one of five Junior Master Chef Culinary Adventures at Red River College’s School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts, plus the winning sandwich recipe will be featured at Red River’s Culinary Exchange restaurant.
Here’s how to enter the Recipe for Success Contest:
-          Grab a group of two to four kids in Grades 4-6.
-          Create the most outrageous, nutritious and delicious sandwich.
-          Make a video – up to three minutes in length – demonstrating how to make the sandwich.
-          Submit the video between January 13, 2014 and March 14, 2014.
-          Visit www.wpgfdn.org/recipe-for-success for complete contest details.
Why is The Winnipeg Foundation spearheading this initiative? We believe all kids have a right to healthy and affordable food. We fund a variety of programs that help kids access healthy food and cooking skills, including supporting the Child Nutrition Council (in-school food access) and through our Nourishing Potential Endowment Fund (after-school food access, cooking skills development and nutrition education).

I am asking that students plan their video at home with their group, but I am willing to film them during a lunch hour if they are interested.

As always, please email me if you have any questions.

Speeches

Good afternoon,

I realized that the dates on the letter that I sent home were incorrect.  It will however be during the 2nd-3rd week of February.

I am also asking students to continue working on their research over the weekend.  I will count this as their French reading.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Les discours

Bonjour!

It is that time of year again when the students will be writing their speeches.  I am asking them to think of a topic and to begin their research.  I will give them some time to research information using the iPads as well as finding books in the school library.

I will be sending home an information package with your child today and I am asking that the front page be signed and returned.  I will also send home a copy of the evaluation that I will be using for the presentations in the next few weeks.

As always, please feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Fair Trade Presentation

Good afternoon!

We were fortunate enough to have Kira Burkett from Fair Trade Manitoba come in and do a presentation about fair trade.  She talked about the different processes it takes to receive certain products and that fair trade aims to eliminate some of that in order to guarantee better wages for the farmers in developing countries.

The students participated in game where they had to earn the most money for their workers.
