Human Kindness International

Good afternoon.

This morning we were fortunate enough to have Muuxi Adam, one of the founders of Human Kindness International, come and speak to the grade 5 students about this organization and why it is so important to him. Muuxi came to Canada from Sudan. He spent part of his life in a refugee camp in Kenya.

A big thank you goes out to Sebastian for helping organize the presentation and for his donation of $125. Rather then accepting birthday gifts, he requested money for Human Kindness. Bravo Sebastian!

Math Quiz

Good morning,

I will be giving the students a quiz to cover our unit on division.  I will be giving them some questions to cover 3 digits divided by 2 digits equations on Wednesday and on Thursday, I will give them basic division questions as well as questions with remainders.

We have discussed different strategies to solve long equations and I have sent home a paper demonstrating the different strategies.  The students have also been participating in different Math centres in order to prepare and to practice.  We will also do an in class review tomorrow and I will also ask some students to come to Faisons nos devoirs for extra practice.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

February Newsletter

ELA:
The students have been writing persuasive writing texts in hopes of convincing Hershey’s to become part of the Fair Trade Organization.  They continue to practice their words.  Their next step is to work on their editing skills using their weekly TWAS.

Sciences humaines:
The students have been looking at different explorers and Vikings and as well as the countries who financed the expeditions.  The students completed a small research project on a Viking or explorer of their choice.  We also discussed the relationship between the Aboriginals and the Europeans once they established a colony in North America.

Sciences de la nature and Hygiène:
The students have almost completed part of the unit Maintaining a Healthy Body.  The students are now looking at the different systems (for example, the digestive system).

Arts plastiques:
The students created a totem pole for the classroom.

Français:
The students have spent most of their time writing a speech for the concours d’art oratoire this month. As a class, we started off exploring different ideas for their speech. Students heard examples of speeches and we identified the structures of these speeches. Finally each student wrote a minimum of 2 minutes.

Math:
We have begun our unit on long division.  We also continued to work on problem solving and mental math strategies. They completed a problem involving the fur trade to go along with Festival du Voyageur week

Good morning,

I will be giving the students a quiz in Sc. Nat on Wednesday.  It covers half of the unit Maintaining a Healthy Body.

I have sent a note home explaining what to study and I have also gone over the study notes with the students.   We will do a review tomorrow.

There are a few students missing today, so I will give them an extra day to study.  They may do the quiz on Thursday.
