September Newsletter

September Newsletter 5-22

The month of September has been very busy.  The introduction of classroom expectations and getting to know the students has certainly made this month pass by very quickly.  Here are the topics that we have been covering in different subject areas:

ELA:
In ELA, We have been doing different activities to get to know everyone (including Mme Craciun) better, including a character bag presentation and a bio poem.  We will soon be working on Guided Reading.

Science humaines:
In Sciences humaines, we have been discussing provinces and territories and their capital cities.  We have also been working on geographical regions of Canada such as the Prairies and the Canadian Shield.

Sciences de la nature:
In Sciences de la nature, we have been looking at the vocabulary for the weather, discussing how weather affects humans and animals, and the different characteristics of air.
Hygiène:
In hygiène, we have discussed bullying.

Arts plastiques:
In art, we have created pictures frames and the students drew a self-portrait to go along with the ELA theme of All About Me.  They also began a time line project using pictures from home.

Français:
Students have been working hard at getting back into the routines of reading every evening.  We have also been going over verbs in class to ensure students are familiar with them.  We read a play about the start of the school year. Students have been practicing the plays with their groups and will present them to the class!

Mathématiques
At the beginning of September students traced their shoes and measured the perimeter to make a locker nametag. We are currently working on number concepts.  We have also been working on mental math strategies.

We have really enjoyed our first month with this great grade 5 class!!

Nina:
This month we did a galaxy of things.
In FLA we've learned about verbs in French and correcting phrases and rewriting them the way they're supposed to be.  For example, j'ai fini mon travail.  We've also read in French for 15-20 minutes by ourselves and with another person.
In Math we've been playing Math games where you have to say a certain number in the hundred thousands or someone picks a certain number like 902 634 and the other person says the number in French and then arranges the digits to make the smallest and the biggest number possible.  We've been doing Number of the Week every Wednesday which is a page with all of sorts of things you do to represent that number.  We have also been doing Combien de façons which is how many ways you can represent a certain number.  Mme Craciun also showed us that we are going to make our own problem.
In Social Studies we've had a revision of last year about the capital cities and the provinces.  We'e learned about geographical regions.  We've also started reading about Aboriginals and their culture.
In Science, we've been doing a bunch of experiments.  The first one was a practice.  It was to see how many drops of water can go on a penny.  The other experiments were about air.  The first one was if hot air rises.  The way we did the experiment was we heated up a flashlight and put it over the kernels and if the kernels started smoking, it would mean that hot air rises.  Conclusion, the experiment didn't work.  The second one was to see if air had a mass.  We did the experiment like this: We blew up two balloons.  One was blown up more then the other.  If the balloons were the same weight, then air doesn't have a mass.  If the one with more air went towards the bottom, then air had a mass.  Conclusion, air does have a mass.  The third experiment was to see if air had a force.  We hadn't really found out the conclusion yet.
In ELA we've done a booklet called All About Me where you write all about yourself.  We've also started a booklet called SMART shows the 7 intelligences.  We've also read in English by ourselves and with a partner.
In Musique we've been play instruments and we've just started choir.  I
n Gym we've been playing ball tag and throwing balls at the wall and skipping ropes and we've also been doing a race.
All the students had a blast this month!
Sincerely,
Nina

Kehlan:

Dear parents,

We have been doing a lot of stuff lately.  The students have been learning about different provinces and cities.  For a couple of days, we have been working on an art project.  We are creating a timeline of important dates in our lives.  For example, the year I went to Disneyland, or Ontario, or Mexico.
For Math, we are doing combien de façons (how many ways).  We also did a foot game. In Science, we did a lot of experiments.
For ELA we presented a character bag.  We are also doing a SMART booklet.
