Words Their Way
Hello parents!
We have begun a new word study program called Words Their Way. This program is designed to help students look critically at words so they can build a deeper understanding of how spelling works to represent sounds and meaning. Once they are able to recognize certain patterns, they will be able to apply this in their writing. This will assist them in becoming better readers and writers.
During class time, the students will do a number of hands on activities throughout the week to study their words. They will do word sorts to start out. This is when they sort their words into categories based on features they share. They will also do writing pieces using their words in order to apply this in their reading and writing. The students will also receive a copy of the sorts to bring home, so you may even ask them to show you some of the activities.
The students have been divided into appropriate level spelling "sorts" depending on their initial spelling assessment which was done at the end of September.
Please feel free to email me if you have any questions or concerns.

LCM
Dear
parents,
Starting today, I will be sending home a
French book for you child to read throughout the week. The following week, I will ask them to come
and read a part of the book with me.
They will receive three books at the same level. If they are able to read a few pages of each
book without any difficulties, I will move them up a level. When reading from their book, I will look for
fluency, accuracy, and comprehension. I
will also read with your child in small groups during Guided Reading. You can also ask them to explain their book
to you with such questions like “What is your favourite part and why?”
If
you have any questions about the process, please feel free to contact me at scraciun@sjsd.net
