Good afternoon,
I have handed out a new reading form. The students are to read for 20 minutes a day (10 in English and 10 in French). The form should be signed on a daily basis. If it is signed, the students will receive a coupon for a free kid's meal at Boston Pizza.
As always, please feel free to email me if you have any questions at scraciun@sjsd.net or at 885-2216.

Please Share Your Thoughts
Good afternoon,
The following message was sent out to parents by our Superintendent Brett Lough:
The following message was sent out to parents by our Superintendent Brett Lough:
This is a reminder. Dear Parents, Staff and Community,
As we plan for the future, the St. James-Assiniboia School Division senior administration is proposing a reorganization at the middle years level to ensure equity and viability exists at all of our current middle years schools.
To join the conversation, just click on the link below. You'll be asked to share your thoughts through a series of three open-ended questions.

Significant growth in our French Immersion Early Years Program will impact École Golden Gate Middle School within the next two years. Physical capacity issues regarding a lack of space will not allow for the Division to accommodate the French Immersion Middle Years Program at the current Golden Gate Middle School facility. An additional challenge that exists is the continued low enrolment at Ness and Hedges Middle Schools, which are located in the John Taylor catchment area. The proposed reorganization provides the Division with the opportunity to reorganize our middle years schools in order to provide better programming for all of our students.
Over the past few months, the Division leadership has discussed many different options in an effort to respond considerately to school building limitations, the needs of our students and the impact on families in our communities. For this reason we are looking for feedback on the current proposal. *This proposal is not the final decision*. We want to let every voice be heard, and use the information we receive to inform the decision.
Notes about this process:
1. We estimate it will take you between 5 minutes and 15 minutes to participate.
2. Please complete this step by Wednesday September 30, 2015 11:00 PM.
3. You can complete questions at your own pace, and come back to change, add or delete your answers at any time until this date.
4. If you would rather not participate, please click here to opt out
5. This is the first of three steps: Share - Star - Discover. More information can be found by clicking the link below.

Character Bag
Good afternoon,
As a class, we have discussed our 4 basic needs in order to be happy: Love and Belonging, Freedom, Power, Fun.
Starting on Tuesday, each student will present their character bag to the class. The students are asked to bring a paper or a plastic bag and items from home which represents all 4 needs. One item can represent more than one need (for example, a photo with friends could represent love and belonging as well as fun). The items should be small enough to fit into their bag, for example, if a dog represents love and belonging, the student could bring a dog collar or a dog toy.
I will give them time on Wednesday to practice presenting. We will be presenting on Thursday and Friday.
Here is an example of what I would include in my character bag:
Power and Freedom - A cd to represent music because I love to sing. I feel I have a good voice (power) and I feel free when I sing (freedom).
Love and belonging and Fun - I would bring some photos of my family and friends and a cat toy to represent my pets.
If you have any questions, please send me an email as soon as possible and I will respond right away.
Have a great weekend!

LCM and HR
Bonjour!
The students chose their first LCM book today and some chose a HR book from the classroom.
The students are expected to read in English and in French everyday. Their sheet should be signed once a week indicating the book (or books) their child has read. If the students have read the same book (a novel) throughout the week, parens are only expected to sign for that book once, but indicate that their child read the same book,
The students also chose a French book from the classroom library and may change their books throughout the week. If they are confident that they can choose a different level book, they can come and see me and I will read with them.
I will also test them once or twice a month to make sure they are choosing books appropriate for their reading skills.
If you do have any questions, please feel free to email me (scraciun@sjsd.net).
Merci!
